Ukrainian police have identified a Russian officer they say was responsible for massacring civilians in Bucha, a suburb of Kyiv, during a series of atrocities by occupying forces in 2022 that shocked the world.

Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski has urged Kyiv to permit the exhumation of victims from the Volhynia massacre, saying that they deserve to receive treatment “no worse” than Ukraine has offered to fallen Wehrmacht soldiers.

Ukraine’s Institute of National Memory (UINP) has said it will begin searching for the remains of Polish victims of the WWII Volhynia massacre as early as 2025.

On 13 April 1943, information was revealed in Berlin about the mass graves found in Katyn of Polish officers murdered by the Soviet secret police agency (NKVD).

For decades, the Soviets denied responsibility for the killings, attributing them to the Germans until 1990, when they officially acknowledged NKVD involvement.

“It is very important to always remember history, not to forget. Because 'Never again!' are not empty words,” Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on Friday during the commemorations of the 82nd year mark of a mass killing of Jewish men, women, and children in Nazi-occupied Kyiv.
