Rafał Trzaskowski, the mayor of Warsaw and a presidential candidate, has said the next head of state has to explain to Washington that Warsaw has similar interests.

Speaking on the campaign trail on Saturday, Trzaskowski, who is running as a candidate of the center-right liberal Civic Coalition (KO), advocated raising defense spending to 5% of GDP in 2026.

U.S. President Donald Trump has said NATO countries should increase their defense budgets to 5% of GDP.

Trzaskowski said events in Washington were causing various anxieties but that he favored a “common sense” approach.

“Let’s look calmly at what’s happening in the United States at the moment and, above all, let’s persuade the new administration that we have very similar interests,” he said.

“We have a government that is respected in the European Union,” he said. “We could use a president who will be respected.”

Trzaskowski said an unstable Europe would be a problem for the U.S.

“If, God forbid, Putin could present the end of the war in Ukraine as a success, it would weaken both Poland and Europe, but it would also weaken the United States, and I think Trump realizes that perfectly,” he said.

The Warsaw mayor said Poland had the wherewithal to convince the U.S. it could take responsibility for itself and also persuade the EU that it needs to take security seriously, as Putin and other adversaries only respect strength.
