Poland plans to build a new tall ship designed to train greenhorn sailors, as a replacement for the country’s famous but now aging Dar Młodzieży vessel, officials have said.

Speaking to broadcaster Polsat News, Infrastructure Minister Dariusz Klimczak said: “I have decided that we will build a new Dar Młodzieży, a new training sailing ship for teaching purposes.” He added that a second scientific and research vessel would also be built.

Klimczak said that the current Dar Młodzieży sailing ship is outdated and that not all training cruises can be conducted using it.

The cost of the project is estimated to be around 300 million złoty (€71.1 million), and will take “a few” years to complete, Klimczak added.

The current Dar Młodzieży, a three-masted frigate, was launched at the Gdańsk Shipyard in 1981.

It is used to train students at the Gdynia Maritime University, and is also used by students at other maritime schools across the country.
