The parliamentary team investigating offenses allegedly committed by Poland’s former ruling party, Law and Justice (PiS), will file a notice with the prosecutor’s office next week against the Polish Olympic Committee board members for alleged misuse of state funds, said the chairman of the parliamentary group.

Roman Giertych, head of the parliamentary team investigating alleged wrongdoing under PiS, explained that the issue is the suspected use of state money “for private purposes that have nothing to do with the goals of the Polish Olympic Committee (PKOI).”

However, PiS has repeatedly denied accusations of any wrongdoing and says the investigation of the commissions will merely be a piece of political theatre that distracts lawmakers from more important issues.

According to MP Katarzyna Kierzek-Koperska, of the current ruling party and a member of the investigation team, “during PiS rule, a web of personal connections of the so-called family on its own” was created around PKOI.

“In connection with the emerging information about the use of PKOI’s de facto money coming directly or indirectly from the State Treasury to finance the families of PKOI activists, including the president himself, to the detriment of PKOI, but also to the athletes who had the right to count on PKOI’s help, we are submitting a notice on the possibility of committing a crime by members of the PKOI board of directors,” said Kierzek-Koperska. However, Radosław Piesiewicz who heads PKOI has argued that he acted according to the law and denied any wrongdoing.
