Joe Biden’s decision to quit the U.S. presidential race was “very much expected over the last few days”, according to Marcin Zaborowski, policy director of the Future Security Program at the Bratislava-based Globsec think-tank.
Biden endorsed Kamala Harris as his replacement in the race for the White House, though this will be decided by the Democrats during a convention in mid-August.
Zaborowski spoke about the impact of Biden’s decision on U.S. foreign policy, particularly regarding Ukraine.
“Biden will address the nation within the next 48 hours and I expect Ukraine to feature prominently during that speech," he said.
“Clearly the issue of unity of NATO and the United States' role in endorsing Ukraine is one of the elements of his ticket that he's very proud of.”
On Donald Trump’s reaction, Zaborowski told TVP World that the Republican nominee seems to be happy with the change of his opponent, who Trump said would be easier to beat.
But Zaborowski added that Biden’s decision “complicates the strategy of the Republican Party” as it will need to step away from current methods, such as criticizing the incumbent president’s age and his lack of stamina.
As for other potential Democratic candidates, Zaborowski dismissed the notion that figures like Michelle Obama and California Governor Gavin Newsom could step in.
“Michelle Obama has repeatedly said she is uninterested in politics,” he said, adding that Newsom does not bring significant additional value to the ticket.
