A pet shop owner is facing five years in jail after police found a boxload of dead animals hidden inside a fridge.
Officers made the grim discovery during a raid on the premises in the Krakow district of Nowa Huta.
Police spokeswoman Anna Zięcik said: “At the scene, officers and a veterinary expert determined that the owner of the pet shop had been storing carcasses of dead exotic animals in the refrigerator, including leopard tortoises, desert tortoises, a Russian tortoise, a skink lizard, and geckos.”
She added that some of the exotic breeds were protected by the Washington Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora.
Officers also found the 54-year-old store owner offering to sell animals, including a rare breed of snake whose origins were questionable, along with fake documents and medicines that could only be used by veterinarian doctors.
The man is now facing charges of forgery and a charge under the Nature Conservation Act.
