Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk has said that ‘most’ EU heads of state have agreed to prioritize security on Poland’s eastern border and to “pay for our security”.
Speaking to journalists following his three day visit to Brussels, Tusk said that he had spoken to many European leaders who had given him their support and assurances that Poland’s border security was a common task for the whole EU.
Tusk said: “There is a political consensus that the border, especially the Polish border with Belarus, is a European border.
“I have spoken to most European prime ministers and presidents precisely on this issue and everyone without exception, including the candidate for the head of the European Commission, confirmed their readiness to treat investment in the protection of the eastern border of the European Union as a joint task of the entire European Union, including European funding for at least some tasks on this border.”
The prime minister went on to say that his government would be discussing details with the new European Commission, adding: "But today I can already assure you: Europe will pay for our security, because our border security is European security.”
