Students of Wrocław University of Science and Technology clinched first and third places in a prestigious international space probe competition, outperforming 33 teams from around the globe.

The victorious Aerospace student research team achieved an impressive 99.86% of the total points.

The CanSat Competition, held between June 6 and 9 in Monterey, Virginia, U.S., required participating probes to meet rigorous technical standards before launch.

The competition tasked the 33 finalist teams with building a compact probe (over 14 cm in diameter and 40 cm in length) that would be launched to an altitude of approximately 750 meters. Upon descent, the probe needed to collect telemetry data and emit a sound signal upon landing.

Before the competition began, organizers evaluated the probe construction plans, and teams had to conduct environmental tests to ensure that their probes met all technical criteria.

During the finals, participants had to measure speed using a Pitot tube, which is used to measure static and dynamic pressure, allowing for the calculation of an aircraft's speed.

Another task involved protecting a delicate payload simulated with a chicken egg. The egg had to withstand the g-forces generated during launch and landing, which could reach up to 30g.

Additionally, the probe needed to survive the entire mission, meaning it had to be ready for reloading into the rocket and launching again after landing.

The Aerospace research group led the competition, scoring 99.86% of the points. This was their fifth entry; they placed second last year and fourth the year before. The KoNaR research group secured third place in this year’s event.

Their probe successfully completed the mission, and their recovery system functioned perfectly. They were one of the few teams whose design safely landed with a parachute.

The competition was organized by the American Astronautical Society with sponsorship from NASA and technology industry companies.
