Polish President Andrzej Duda has signed a bill that amends a law on aid for Ukrainian citizens, which is specifically for those seeking refuge due to the ongoing war in their country.

The amendment extends their legal stay in Poland and establishes new rules for their benefit payments.

The President’s Office announced the signing of the draft law on Monday.

The key changes to the legislation, adopted by both houses of the country’s parliament, include extending the temporary protection status for Ukrainians and revising educational and financial support policies.

Following Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, a European Council decision on March 4, 2022, which initially granted temporary protection, now extends legal residency for Ukrainian citizens with a Polish national identification number (PESEL) until September 30, 2025.

The amendment further extends the access of Ukrainian citizens to health, family, and social benefits. This includes benefits paid by the social insurer ZUS, as well as the opportunity to stay in collective accommodation facilities.

Under the amendment, the monthly child benefit payments, which amount to 800 złoty (€185) per child, and the one-off payment of 300 złoty (€70) for all students at the start of the school year will be tied to compulsory schooling.
