President to convene National Security Council over Belarus border situation

The president of Poland, Andrzej Duda, has announced a sitting of the National Security Council on Monday to discuss the need for new regulations governing Polish troops at the country’s border with Belarus.

The announcement follows the death on Thursday of a Polish soldier who was stabbed in late May while trying to prevent illegal border crossings. Poland has accused the Belarusian government of orchestrating a migration crisis at its borders with EU states as part of a “hybrid war” tactic to destabilize the bloc.

Duda said security should take precedence over party-political divides and that security issues should be resolved in a spirit of cooperation.

He said that everything Poland had experienced since 2021 on its border with Belarus “shows that a change is necessary in regulations concerning the operations of our soldiers supporting the Border Guard.”

He said special regulations were needed so Polish troops were not restricted by rules created for the Border Guard.

“This is why I have decided to convene the National Security Council on Monday, so that we can discuss this matter with representatives of all parts of the political spectrum,” he said.
