Slovakian authorities have provided an update on the condition of Prime Minister Rober Fico describing it as “still serious” but “stable”.

Speaking on Saturday, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defense Robert Kaliniak said that there would be no need to hand over the PM’s duties.

“Several miracles have happened and I cannot find the words to thank the doctors for the fact that we are getting closer to a positive prognosis,” said Kaliniak. He added that the Prime Minister was conscious and they were now able to communicate with him on “the most important matters”.

The gravity of his situation, however, has meant that a transfer to a hospital in Bratislava remains unlikely over the coming days.

On Friday, Fico underwent another operation at the Banska Bystrica hospital; the two-hour surgery was undertaken to check on how his wounds were healing and to remove dead tissue. Slovakia's Minister of Health, Zuzana Dolinkova, said that Friday's procedure “allowed for a good prognosis”.

Following the attack, the prime minister was rushed to hospital where surgeons operated on his abdomen and chest for five-hours.

Whilst Fico recovers, the Deputy Prime Minister said he would chair the next government meetings. These include one regular session and one special ministerial meeting concerning European funds. Kaliniak emphasized that ministers were continuing to work as normal.

Kaliniak repeated claims scapegoating the media for the assassination attempt, blaming the press for polarizing Slovak society. “Robert Fico has long been described using the worst adjectives - he has been described as evil on billboards," said Kaliniak.
