U.S. Secretary of State pays surprise visit to Ukraine

U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken arrived in Ukraine today for an unexpected visit. The trip comes as Russian forces have entered the Kharkiv region in yet another bid to take control over the northeastern area.

According to a senior U.S. official, Blinken is expected to deliver a speech in Kyiv, addressing the $60 billion aid package for the war-torn country.

Passed by the U.S. Congress three weeks ago, top Ukrainian officials say the bill came too late, given the swiftly deteriorating situation on the battlefield as Russian troops are pushing into the Kharkiv region.

According to Ukrainian soldiers cited by the BBC, Moscow’s forces also have entered the city of Vovchansk.

Thousands of civilians have fled their homes and moved toward the city of Kharkiv in recent days, according to the Ukrainian government. The Kharkiv region was partially occupied in March 2022 and then liberated by the Ukrainian Armed Forces in September of the same year.
