Hackers have broken into Europol’s Platform for Experts (EPE) website and are now selling their loot online, the German weekly “Der Spiegel” reported on Sunday.
“Hackers apparently succeeded in breaking into Europol’s closed platform…,” read the newspaper’s portal.
Thousands of police officers and experts from across Europe exchange knowledge and information on crime-related topics on EPE. Only administrators can add new users to the platform, which Europol describes as one of its main applications.
Now, however, cybercriminals are offering data stolen from the platform for sale, Der Spiegel reported. It added that a user of a forum popular among hackers wrote about the Europol data leak in May on Friday. “I’m selling the entire Europol dataset today,” he said.
The package on offer included PDF documents, data of Europol members and code that was classified as for official use only.
“It is possible to find out on a cybercrime forum that the stolen data has already been sold, but this information cannot be verified,” the weekly stipulates.
A Europol spokeswoman contacted by the newspaper only confirmed that there had been an “incident” in a closed group on the EPE platform. “First actions have already been taken,” she added.
It is not yet known how the hackers broke into the system. However, it is known that EPE has been inaccessible since Friday.
