Russia says it will carry out a military exercise that will include the use of tactical nuclear weapons in response to what it says are provocative threats from Western officials.

According to the Russian defense ministry, the drill was personally ordered by President Vladimir Putin to test the readiness of non-strategic nuclear forces for combat missions.

The ministry said: “During the exercise, a set of measures will be carried out to practice the issues of preparation and use of non-strategic nuclear weapons in response to provocative statements and threats by certain Western officials against the Russian Federation.”

Although the ministry did not mention any officials by name, Moscow has frequently pointed to ‘extremely dangerous’ comments by French President Emmanuel Macron about the possibility of French intervention in Ukraine.

Russia has also said that the U.S. and its European allies are threatening to bring the world to the brink of confrontation with their military support of Ukraine.
