We have recently significantly improved our defense capabilities at sea. Together with Poland and our new NATO allies, Sweden and Finland, we should be able to prevent a potential Russian blockade of the Baltic Sea, Estonian Army Commander Gen. Martin Herem wrote in a special report.
“‘Revanchist Russia’ seeks to reshape the European security architecture and regain control of lost territories and expand its influence into areas historically dominated by the Russian Empire and the USSR. At the same time, it wants to expand the anti-Western buffer to include countries that have successfully managed to join the West or those that are on the right path to do so,” the report says.
Perhaps in the context of the threat to Russia’s neighbors, “it is not wrong to compare the present day to the 1930s,” argued Gen. Herem, especially since Russian elites have shifted not only the economy but also society to the war track.
The review pays much attention to the indoctrination of Russian society with war propaganda from childhood.
“Tougher and more challenging times are probably still ahead. But we have more iron, more men and more wisdom than ever before. This inspires confidence,” concluded the Commander of the Estonian Armed Forces.
