The maiden voyage of the Polish-built Pesa train on Ghana’s latest railway line encountered a tragic setback on its inaugural day. The train, unable to brake in time, collided with a truck that became stuck on the tracks outside a railway crossing.

The truck stopped on the tracks beyond the railway crossing, remaining unseen by the train operator until it emerged from a bend, according to rynek-kolejowy.pl. Despite efforts, the collision was unavoidable.

Fortunately, the safety features of the Polish-built Pesa train sprang into action. The machine is equipped with energy-absorbing mechanisms and a designated crush zone, so no one got injured. The train is expected to continue its journey to the base in Tema using its own locomotion.

This incident concludes the inaugural day of testing for the Pesa traction unit, which arrived by sea in Ghana, marking a significant milestone for the nation’s first-ever standard-gauge railway line.
