The situation on the Ukrainian front is critical, and the coming weeks may decide the fate of Russia’s war against Ukraine, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk told reporters after an informal European Council summit in Brussels on Thursday.

A shared purpose was articulated that “Europe takes a part of the responsibility for the safety of the skies over Ukraine,” Tusk said adding that the conclusions of the summit contained a provision obliging the European Union to urgently provide air defense to Ukraine.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who joined the meeting remotely, “stressed the immediate, perhaps decisive need to provide Ukraine with systems that could combat Russian missiles and drones,” Tusk pointed out.

We are waiting for the Americans to decide on the USD 60 billion for Ukraine. This should be resolved within two days, but a question mark is still hanging over,” he said, referring to a U.S. aid package that has been stuck in Congress for months over a dispute between Republicans and Democrats.

Tusk also said that Germany, which provided another set of Patriot batteries to Ukraine, called on other countries with such capabilities to join the initiative.

However, he pointed out that Berlin’s appeal did not apply to Poland. “We don't have enough Patriots to share right now. Nobody expects this from Poland, as a frontline state,” the PM said.
