Poland in ‘cyber cold war’ against Russia: Polish digitalization minister

Krzysztof Gawkowski, the Polish digitalization minister, has warned of cyber attacks from Russia and its allied countries at the cybersecurity conference.

On Tuesday, Krzysztof Gawkowski spoke at the opening of the 27th edition of the conference in Warsaw on ICT (information and communications technology) security entitled “Horizon of Cyber Challenges,” organized by NASK, a state-owned Polish R&D organization.

According to Gawkowski, Poland is currently in a state of “cyber cold war” against Russia. He said the country faces “an improbable arms race” in cybersecurity.

“I am convinced that we are dealing with actions that I would not call warlike, but cold-war-like for sure,” Gawkowski said.

According to the digitalization minister, the number of cyberattacks in Poland increased by 100% between 2022 and 2023.

He added that the attacks are directed not only from Russia and Belarus but also from countries supporting Russia.

“Poland receives the largest share of Russian attacks of all of Ukraine’s allied countries,” he said.

Gawkowski also pledged to present a draft amendment enhancing the law on the National Cyber Security System by the end of the month.
