Security a key word for Poland’s upcoming Council presidency: PM Tusk

Poland’s Prime Minister, Donald Tusk, emphasized that security is paramount for both the upcoming Polish presidency of the European Council and the EU summit that took place in Warsaw on Thursday.

Tusk was speaking at a press conference alongside European Council President Charles Michel. He said it was no mistake that the meeting of EU heads of government, being held to discuss EU strategy and the continent’s political programme, was taking place in Warsaw.

“Warsaw is a special place from the point of view of the whole of Europe,” the prime minister said. “This is determined by Poland’s position but also by the special situation the whole continent finds itself in. And here in Poland we are closest to those events that have caused us to be dealing with a specific historical situation,” Tusk added.

He said the word “security” was key to both Poland’s future presidency of the Council, in the first half of 2025, and to Thursday’s summit. “The Polish presidency will work hard for security in several dimensions,” Tusk said, going on to explain that security related to irregular migration would also be a subject on the summit’s agenda.

He said Poland felt the combination of the hostile and aggressive policies of Moscow and Minsk, joining forces to create a migration wave.

He told Michel that thanks to his efforts, the whole bloc had started to think the same way about such threats, which is why national leaders had come from across Europe to Warsaw. He said the meeting would be “a discussion about a revolution in thinking.” “Europe must become the greatest political entity; we are stronger than the United States and Russia put together,” Tusk said.
