The Estonian Centre for Defence Investments has signed a contract with Moldova’s Defense Ministry and the Czech arms company ERA for the purchase of a radar system for Moldova, the Baltic News Service (BNS) reported Wednesday.

The system will significantly improve Moldova’s capabilities for defense and surveillance of the country’s airspace, the Center stressed in a communiqué issued Wednesday.

It will be procured as part of an aid package funded by the European Union through the European Peace Facility (EPF), which aims to enhance Moldova’s security, stability, and resilience in the area of defense.

“As the implementer of the project, we are pleased to be able to contribute our experience and expertise in the procurement of systems for air surveillance and communications, armored vehicles, and various combat vehicles,” Director General at the Estonian Centre for Defence Investments, Magnus-Valdemar Saar, said.

Moldovan Defense Minister Anatolie Nosatii thanked EU partners for the assistance, which “contributes to strengthening the country’s defense capabilities.” He noted that similar projects will continue for the benefit of his country's citizens.

Our partners have repeatedly shown us support through consistent and continuous assistance in implementing reforms, continuing the European course, and modernizing the army, showing that they are with us. I thank all our external partners for their openness to our requests and for helping us strengthen the country’s defense capabilities,” he said.

Since 2021, the EU has provided Moldova with EUR 128 million through the EPF.

In early April this year, Moldovan Foreign Minister Mihai Popsoi stated that the country’s relations with Russia are the worst in recent history.

The National Security Strategy, adopted in December 2023, states that Russia poses the main threat to Moldova with its war against neighboring Ukraine, Moldova's military hold on Transnistrian territory, and hybrid attacks.
