Where will Pellegrini’s presidency take Slovakia? Ján Orlovský for TVP World

After the second round of Slovakia’s presidential elections, Peter Pellegrini will take office in June. What does he have in store for Slovakia in terms of economy and international relations as well as in terms of regular citizens? To shed more light on the issue TVP World invited Ján Orlovský a Coordinator with Platform for Democracy.

“It's a vote of confidence… to the politicians who sometimes betray their voters,” said Orlovský.

Orlovský mentioned that Orbán’s influence in Slovakia resulted in the Hungarian minority voting in favor of Pellegrini, in exchange for a promise of more autonomy in southern Slovakia.

Our host, David Kennedy, asked the expert not only about the elections but also the broader perspective of Slovak international politics and what role the newly elected president might play in it.

Right after the results were announced, Ivan Korčok, the other candidate, congratulated Peter Pellegrini on his victory and told him he hoped Pellegrini would perform his duties independently, which could be taken as a jab at the president-elect’s long-standing relationship with current PM Robert Fico.
