We like Mark Rutte, but we will advocate for candidates from our region for high positions in NATO, the EU, and the UN. Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski said in Brussels on Wednesday after being asked whether his country supports the candidacy of Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte for the position of NATO Secretary-General.

“We [Central and Eastern European states] believe that our region is inadequately represented in both the Alliance and the EU, as well as in the UN system. We will advocate for candidates for high positions in all three organizations from our region,” he said.

Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte has the backing of some 90% of NATO members for the job, including the United States, France, Britain, and Germany, according to diplomats.

But he faces opposition from Hungary and from Romanian President Klaus Iohannis.

A two-day meeting of NATO foreign ministers is ongoing in Brussels to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the signing of the Washington Treaty and welcome Sweden, the 32nd member, which joined the Alliance on March 7.

Washington brought the original North Atlantic Treaty, also known as the Washington Treaty, to Brussels for this occasion. It will be on display at NATO headquarters in Brussels on Thursday and Friday. On Saturday, the document will return to Washington.
