Seven CEE nations mark 20 years in NATO

March 29th commemorates the 20th anniversary of the admission of seven Central and Eastern European nations to NATO, marking the alliance's fifth and most extensive expansion to date.

On March 29, 2004, Bulgaria, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Romania, Slovakia, and Slovenia were inducted into the Alliance, increasing its total membership to 26. Today, celebrations are underway in these countries, attended by top state officials. These seven countries began accession talks shortly after the Soviet Union's dissolution.

A prior group of former Soviet satellites, including Poland, which celebrated its 25th NATO membership anniversary on March 12, joined in 1999.
