Over half of Poles want referendum on abortion: survey

A new Pollster survey, commissioned by the Polish daily Super Express and published on Wednesday, found that 56% of Poland’s population want a referendum on the matter of abortion laws in the country.

The current law in Poland dictates that abortion is accessible only when the pregnancy is a result of a criminal act or when the woman's life or health is in danger.

The results show that 56% of the respondents wanted the referendum on abortion laws to take place, while 28% held the opposite view, and the remaining 16% did not have an opinion on the subject.
Additionally, 73% of those surveyed said that they wanted to take part in the vote, 17% had no desire to do so, and 10% did not hold any stance.

The referendum on the issue of abortion is a notion promoted by politicians from the centre-right Third Way party, which is a part of the current coalition government.

“They even tabled a draft law on the matter [in parliament], but just like all the other ideas concerning abortion, it will be proceeded only after the local government elections,” Super Express wrote.

The study was conducted between March 16 and 17, 2024, on a representative sample of 1,072 adult Poles.
