French President Emmanuel Macron’s proposal to consider all options, including deploying troops to Ukraine, to ensure Russia’s defeat has sparked a vigorous debate across the political landscape. But how do the French people, as well as the French political elite, interpret Macron’s remarks? To shed light on this question, TVP World invited James Andre, a reporter at France 24.
Andre disclosed that he had conversations with leaders from two major French political parties representing opposite ends of the spectrum: the far-left party “La France Insoumise” (Unbowed France) and the far-right party National Rally. The leader of the far-left party expressed support for aiding Ukraine but emphasized reluctance to involve France directly into the war, stating, “This could give us a nuclear conflict.” Similar sentiments were echoed by the National Rally.
Regarding the response from the French populace, Andre noted it has been diverse.
He explained Macron’s stance as follows: “There must be no red lines as we are confronted with Vladimir Putin, who observes no red lines. Therefore, we must consider all available options.” He further elaborated that Macron’s approach finds more resonance with Eastern and Central European countries like Poland, which face a direct threat from Russia, in contrast to Western European nations, which tend to exercise caution due to their geographical distance from the conflict zone.
