Southeast Asia’s largest and longest-running multi-national annual military exercise, dubbed Cobra Gold, officially commenced on Tuesday (February 27) in eastern Thailand.

This year’s Cobra Gold exercise will see over 9,000 troops from 30 countries participating in the drills, which will last until March 8, according to an official press release.

In addition to Thailand and the U.S., Japan, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, and South Korea are participating in the main part of the maneuvers, which last until March 8. In contrast, representatives from China, India, Australia, and other countries will only join the humanitarian and disaster response exercises.

Cobra Gold, launched in 1982, is a war games event that serves as a key platform for the U.S. to shore up alliances in Asia.
