Polish Parliamentary Speaker Szymon Hołownia assured farmers who came to meet him during a massive protest in Warsaw on Tuesday that any matter tabled in the lower house would be taken care of. Nevertheless, consensus is still far away as demonstrators see it that nothing has been agreed on.

A protest of the Polish farmers opposing the EU’s Green Deal and the inflow of Ukrainian agricultural products into the national market reached Warsaw on Tuesday.

The protestors walked the streets of the capital and headed towards the Polish parliament (Sejm). A small group of representatives met there with Hołownia.

According to the speaker, “all the issues that will be tabled, if only both sides will be willing, will be processed and taken care of.”

He said that “it was not the goal of anyone to bring Polish food security and Polish farmers to their demise.”

A representative of the protestors expressed that he strongly believed Holownia would advocate for them.

“In some instances, it will be parliament that will be taking care of these problems, which pose danger to us today,” he said.

However, the talks were apparently not satisfactory for all of the demonstrators as Szczepan Wójcik, one of the protest leaders, went out to speak to farmers gathered outside the parliament and said that “there is no agreement, there are postulates, and now we’re waiting to see what the parliament and government do.”

Wójcik announced the next protest would take place in Warsaw on March 6.

After his meeting with the farmers, Hołownia said that a proposal came about to organize “a round table” in parliament, which would be attended by farmers, experts, politicians, and market participants. However, the meeting has not yet been agreed upon.
