A speech by exiled Belarusian opposition leader Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya appeared on screens in shopping centers in Belarus on Saturday, an independent Zerkalo outlet reported. As explained, it was an initiative of the opposition organization BELPOL.
“I know that you have not forgotten. We said ‘no’ to the dictatorship. We said ‘no’ to war. Today we say ‘no’ to false elections,” Tsikhanouskaya said in her speech. She stressed that the transformation of the country is the responsibility of every Belarusian.
The speech by the Belarusian opposition leader was shown on the second anniversary of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, which was supported by Alyaksandr Lukashenka’s regime. Criticism of the Belarusian participation in the invasion of Ukraine is banned by the Minks regime. The second reason is the “elections” to parliament and local councils, which are being held in the country on Sunday under the full control of the regime and without the participation of opposition candidates.
According to the independent Zerkalo outlet, the responsibility for hacking the systems that enabled the broadcasting of the speech was claimed by BELPOL, an opposition organization made up of former officers of Belarusian security services. According to BELPOL, the broadcast was shown on some 2,000 screens in various shopping centers.
According to Zerkalo, the information on the number cannot be verified but it is certain that Tsikhanouskaya’s speech managed to reach some audience, as confirmed by recordings on social media platforms and materials sent to the editors. Opposition bloggers also reported that the white-red-white flag and coat of arms, the Pahonia, associated with democratic forces and protests against the Lukashenko regime, appeared on screens in the Minsk subway.
