Russia has rejected proposals for a one-month truce in Ukraine, saying only a “final settlement” would be acceptable to Moscow.

Vladimir Putin has backed plans by Viktor Orbán, the Hungarian prime minister, to get a Christmas ceasefire in Ukraine and a major exchange of prisoners of war, the Kremlin said on Thursday.

However, Israel believes Islamist group Hamas does not want to strike a deal.

Israel boycotted Gaza ceasefire talks in Cairo on Sunday after Hamas rejected its demand for a complete list naming hostages that are still alive, an Israeli newspaper reported.

Gaza ceasefire negotiations are due to resume in Cairo on Sunday, two Egyptian security sources said on Saturday, signaling continued efforts to secure a truce which U.S. President Joe Biden hopes will be in place by March 10.

The United States on Tuesday again vetoed a draft United Nations Security Council resolution on the Israel-Hamas war, blocking the demand for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire.
