Early voting is underway in Michigan ahead of the November 3 midterm elections, with Russia's war in Ukraine emerging as a concern for some voters in the state's sizable Polish-American community. While economic pressures, corruption and immigration feature prominently in the campaign, voters with family ties to Eastern Europe are also weighing Washington's approach to Moscow. Immigration attorney Daria Szwajkun told TVP World that Russia's invasion of Ukraine had revived memories of her family's displacement during World War II. She also expressed regret over supporting President Donald Trump in three previous elections. Polish Americans account for roughly 8% of Michigan's population, making them a potentially significant constituency in a closely contested state. Their political preferences are far from uniform. During the 2024 presidential campaign, Polish-American voters expressed differing views on aid to Ukraine, with some prioritizing domestic economic concerns.
