Norway's tourism agency has turned an insult from US President Donald Trump into a promotional campaign showcasing some of the country's most spectacular public toilets. Trump described Norway as a "shithouse country" during an October 25 rally in Michigan, expressing frustration over his failure to receive the Nobel Peace Prize. Visit Norway responded with a tongue-in-cheek campaign declaring that Norway makes "shithouses great again," parodying Trump's signature political slogan. The campaign highlights architect-designed restrooms along Norway's 18 scenic routes, where facilities overlooking fjords, mountains and waterfalls have become tourist attractions. Trump's remarks followed the decision to award the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize to South African jurist Navi Pillay. The Norwegian Nobel Committee operates independently of Norway's government, despite being appointed by parliament. The president had previously criticized Norway over the award, calling the decision an "indelible stain" on the country.
