People remained on the platform despite warnings of heightened danger A Russian drone attack on Thursday killed 13 people in Ukraine’s Dnipro, governor Oleksandr Hanzha said, after Ukraine’s railway operator reported a lethal attack on the city’s train station. Hanzha said in a post on Telegram that at least 10 more people were wounded, including a 11-year-old boy. “Three people are hospitalized in serious condition,” he said. He added that a Russian drone hit a platform while a commuter train and a passenger train were stopped there. Ukrainian Railways, the country’s state-owned railway company, said the “the enemy struck a railway station in Dnipro with a jet-powered UAV. “The strike hit one of the platforms, where the Dnipro–Zaporizhzhia train was at the time,” it added. “Despite warnings of heightened danger, people were still on the platform. There were deaths and injuries.” Rescuers, medics and law enforcement officers are currently working at the scene. ‘Horrific’ attack Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned the attack as “horrific,” calling for new sanctions to thwart Russia’s ability to finance its war effort. “Just how many terrorist strikes has Russia carried out against our people since sanctions were lifted on certain Russian oligarchs and the Russian energy sector, rather than de-escalating?” “It is time for new, stronger sanctions steps by the EU, the United States, and the G7,” he added in a post on X. Earlier this month, US President Donald Trump announced the easing of restrictions on Russian diesel exports, as Washington appeared to explore closer economic cooperation with Moscow and revive stalled negotiations to end the war in Ukraine. In September, the EU removed two Russian billionaires, Alisher Usmanov and Mikhail Fridman, from its sanctions list, a move that Kyiv labeled “shameful and unjustifiable.” This article includes reporting from Reuters
