Two Belarusian suspects were also detained in Germany as Romania seeks all three men’s extradition Polish police arrested a Ukrainian man in Warsaw on Monday over his suspected role in preparing an arson attack in Romania, authorities said on Wednesday. The announcement came a day after the Romanian president condemned alleged Russian involvement in sabotage on his country’s territory. The man, identified as Artem S., was wanted under a European Arrest Warrant issued by Romanian authorities. He is suspected of helping prepare the September 14 arson attack at an industrial site in Brașov, central Romania, near a state-owned arms manufacturer, according to Poland’s Central Bureau of Police Investigation (CBŚP) and Romanian authorities. Romanian intelligence and prosecutors say the Ukrainian and two Belarusian nationals were part of a sabotage network coordinated from Russia. The two Belarusian suspects were detained in Germany while allegedly preparing similar acts, and Romania is seeking the extradition of all three. The Romanian Intelligence Service said the network’s targets extended beyond Romania to include state-owned and private arms manufacturers and other sites of military and industrial importance. On Tuesday, Romanian President Nicușor Dan condemned alleged Russian involvement in sabotage, writing on X: “Such actions are unacceptable and represent a serious violation of our country’s sovereignty and security.” He said Russia had used election interference, disinformation, cyberattacks and sabotage as part of what he described as a wider campaign to weaken European democracies.
