The vote comes six years after some of the largest protests in modern Polish history, sparked by a tightening of abortion regulations. Speaking on World Talks, Renata Mieńkowska-Norkiene, Political Scientist at the University of Warsaw, argues that the main achievement of the legislation is the degree of unity demonstrated by the governing coalition. “If President Nawrocki vetoes the bills, the responsibility and disappointment of many women will fall on him,” she says. Join Sascha Fahrbach and his guest as they discuss Poland's abortion debate, the prospects of a presidential veto, the legacy of the 2020 protests, and what the dispute could mean for the country's political future.
