Polish tennis star Iga Świątek has announced she will end her 2026 season early, citing the need for physical recovery after what she described as “one of the most demanding seasons” of her career. The former world No. 1 confirmed her decision in an Instagram post on Tuesday, reflecting on a difficult campaign marked by setbacks and challenges. “This has been one of the most demanding seasons of my career, with a lot of challenges, changes and lessons along the way,” Świątek wrote. ‘Incredibly intense’ few months Świątek said the physical demands of competing had taken their toll, prompting her to take an extended break before returning to competition. “The past few months, or actually the past couple of years, have been incredibly intense and I feel I need to rest and recover my body fully,” she wrote. “I’ve decided to end my season here, which means I won’t be playing any more tournaments this year,” she added. The decision brings an end to a frustrating season for the Polish star, who has struggled to reproduce the consistency that previously made her one of the dominant forces in women's tennis. She has also slipped to ninth in the WTA rankings. Wuhan setback and WTA Finals Świątek's announcement comes just days after her semifinal defeat at the Wuhan Open in China, where she lost 7-5, 6-1 to fellow Pole Maja Chwalińska, her childhood friend and former junior doubles partner. Chwalińska went on to defeat Britain's Sonay Kartal 2-6, 6-4, 6-2 in the final, claiming her first WTA Tour title. The Wuhan defeat dealt a major blow to Świątek's hopes of qualifying for the season-ending WTA Finals, a tournament she won in 2023. She still had a mathematical chance of qualifying for the WTA Finals in Indian Wells, California, but needed to reach at least the quarterfinals of the Ningbo Open in China to keep her hopes alive. Her subsequent withdrawal from Ningbo because of a persistent left thigh injury ended her hopes of direct qualification. Although she could still have attended as an alternate, her decision to end her season rules out that possibility. Świątek has won just one tournament this year and failed to advance beyond the quarterfinals at any of the four Grand Slam events, a sharp contrast to the success she enjoyed in previous seasons. ‘I’ll come back with passion’ Despite the disappointing results, Świątek struck an optimistic tone in her farewell message, suggesting that the lessons learned during the season would help her return stronger. “As always, I’ll come back with passion and motivation to keep improving,” she wrote.
