Latvia’s security service has warned that Russia could intensify disinformation efforts ahead of Saturday’s parliamentary election, as voters begin casting ballots in advance. The State Security Service said Moscow could target parties and candidates that strongly oppose Russia’s war against Ukraine. It has identified individual attempts to spread election-related disinformation but says there is currently no evidence of a significant, systematic foreign campaign to influence the result. The warning comes as Latvians choose all 100 members of the Saeima on October 3. The United List leads the final opinion polls, although Latvia’s fragmented political landscape means coalition negotiations are expected after the vote. Sovereign Power/New Latvians, whose prime ministerial candidate is Jūlija Stepaņenko, is also polling above the 5% parliamentary threshold. Advance voting began Monday and continues through Friday at polling stations across the country.
