It is Katarzyna Niewiadoma-Phinney’s second world championship medal. Poland’s Katarzyna Niewiadoma-Phinney claimed silver at the UCI Road World Championships in Montreal on Saturday after losing a thrilling sprint for gold to Dutch rider Demi Vollering. Vollering pulled ahead with 38 kilometers to go in the women’s road race, but Niewiadoma-Phinney and Italy’s Elisa Longo Borghini caught up with her. Longo Borghini later fell behind, leaving the Pole and the Dutchwoman to fight for gold. Niewiadoma-Phinney began her final sprint first, but Vollering passed her before the finish line to claim gold. Longo Borghini took bronze. It was Niewiadoma-Phinney’s second world championship medal, following her bronze in 2021, and Poland’s 19th medal in the senior road race. Polish riders have won seven gold medals in the event.
