Poland’s training ship Dar Młodzieży (Gift of Youth) has embarked on a six-day voyage around the Baltic Sea, carrying nine high school students from Gdynia alongside its crew and 70 maritime university cadets. The students were selected by the city authorities as part of celebrations marking 100 years since Gdynia was granted city rights. During the voyage, they will document life aboard the three-masted sailing ship through photographs, videos and blog posts. The material they produce could eventually become part of a time capsule intended to preserve a record of the centenary for young people a century from now. For the students, the voyage also offers a chance to experience life at sea alongside cadets training for maritime careers. “I think it’ll be fun, although I’m feeling a bit nervous – after all, it’s a new experience, so we’ll see how it goes,” one student said. Dar Młodzieży is due to return to port on October 1.
