A 33-year-old suspect has been remanded in custody. A police officer in southwestern Poland has died after being shot in the head while checking a property for suspected stolen goods, authorities said. Sgt. Natan Sieroń, 29, was shot on Thursday at a property in Kraśnik Górny, a village near the town of Bolesławiec in southwestern Poland. Officers had gone there after receiving information that stolen items might be on the premises. A 33-year-old man returned to the house while they were carrying out their inquiries and fired two shots at Sieroń, prosecutors said. The man fled but was arrested after a chase. Police said officers also fired shots, but he was not injured. Sieroń was airlifted to a hospital in the city of Legnica, where he underwent brain surgery. Police announced his death late Friday. “He died serving to the very end — faithful to the words of his oath: ‘even at the risk of my life,’” the police said in a statement. A court on Saturday ordered the suspect, identified under Polish privacy laws as Mariusz G., to be held for three months. Prosecutors said they would change the charge from attempted murder to murder following Sieroń’s death. Suspect admitted initial charges The man admitted the initial charges of attempted murder and assault on a police officer and gave a statement. Prosecutors declined to disclose what he said, citing the investigation. Prosecutor Sebastian Woźniak said the gun was held illegally. The suspect had been fined in Germany in 2024 for the illegal possession of, and trafficking in, firearms, Woźniak said. He had also been convicted of drunk driving in Poland about 10 years ago. Investigators are questioning witnesses and plan to carry out a ballistic analysis and an autopsy. Sieroń had served in criminal investigations for less than two years, the police said.
