Poland’s Tatra mountain rescue service has warned hikers of possible avalanches as warmer temperatures destabilize snow left by recent snowfall. Winter conditions remain at higher elevations in the Tatra Mountains, along Poland’s southern border with Slovakia, with snow and ice making some trails difficult to navigate. The Tatra Volunteer Search and Rescue Service (TOPR) currently lists the avalanche danger as low, the first level on a five-point scale. But even at level one, small or medium-sized avalanches can occur naturally, while steep grassy slopes covered by fresh snow require particular caution. Rescuers are urging visitors to check current conditions before setting out and exercise particular caution on steep, high-altitude routes.
