Chinese President Xi Jinping arrived in Washington on Wednesday for a three-day state visit, receiving a rare planeside welcome from US President Donald Trump at Joint Base Andrews. The visit comes as Washington and Beijing seek to stabilize relations despite continuing disputes over trade, technology, Taiwan and China’s ties with Iran. Shortly before Xi’s arrival, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said the two countries had agreed to extend their existing trade truce by two months, until January 10. Trump and Xi last met in Beijing in May, when talks focused on trade, Iran and strategic competition. Trump’s visit came amid efforts to secure better market access for US companies and ease economic tensions with Beijing. The latest summit is expected to focus on managing disputes rather than resolving the countries’ broader strategic rivalry, with rare earth supplies and US technology export restrictions also on the agenda.
