The hefty device was removed and safely detonated at a military training ground. Bomb disposal experts were called in after a 50kg German aerial bomb dating from World War II was discovered in woodland in north-western Poland, with the device later removed and safely detonated at a military training ground. The bomb was found during roadworks near a major junction on the outskirts of Szczecin, a city close to Poland’s border with Germany. Military experts identified the device as an SD 50 fragmentation bomb used by German aircraft during the war. Authorities briefly halted traffic on nearby roads on Monday while soldiers removed the bomb. Poland’s Government Security Centre also issued an emergency alert warning people in Szczecin and surrounding areas to stay away, although no evacuations were ordered. The removal operation took about 20 minutes. The bomb was then transported to a military training ground and destroyed in a controlled explosion later that day. Footage released by the military showed a fragment flying over the camera as smoke and debris rose from the blast. Unexploded wartime ordnance is still regularly discovered across Poland, where many towns and cities endured heavy fighting and bombing during World War II.
