World leaders are gathering in New York for the 81st UN General Assembly, with the General Debate opening Tuesday under the theme “Restoring trust, managing transformation: A United Nations that delivers for all.” Among the most closely watched meetings will be between US President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. Zelenskyy said Sunday the two had agreed to meet as Kyiv seeks further diplomatic progress toward ending Russia’s war. Trump is also expected to meet Gulf leaders to discuss the seven-month US-Iran conflict. Washington will allow Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi to attend, while denying Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas a visa for a second straight year. Abbas will address the assembly by video. Karol Nawrocki, the Polish president, is leading Poland’s delegation amid talks over a possible permanent US Army base in Poland.
