Polish President Karol Nawrocki is in New York for a five-day visit centered on the UN General Assembly's high-level week, whose general debate begins on Tuesday. Nawrocki and First Lady Marta Nawrocka opened the trip's public program on Saturday with a wreath-laying ceremony at the Survivor Tree, followed by a visit to the 9/11 Memorial's reflecting pools. The 2001 al-Qaeda attacks killed 2,977 people from more than 90 countries. On Sunday, the presidential couple is scheduled to attend Mass at St Stanislaus Kostka Church in New York before meeting members of the Polish-American community. Nawrocki will speak at the Polish-American Economic Summit on Monday before meeting the presidents of Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia, as well as UN Secretary-General António Guterres and the president of the 81st session of the UN General Assembly, Khalilur Rahman. The Polish president is due to address the General Assembly's 81st-session general debate on Wednesday, opening the afternoon session as its first speaker. The debate begins on Tuesday, September 22, and runs through September 28. The trip comes amid renewed Polish-US security talks, including discussions of a possible US Army base in Poland. Warsaw is seeking to deepen defense cooperation with Washington and reinforce NATO's eastern flank in response to Russian security threats in Eastern Europe. US President Donald Trump said on September 17 that progress was being made on the prospective base, but no site or final agreement has been announced.
