Later on Friday, a Russian glide bomb struck an apartment building in the northern city of Sumy, killing two people. The Ukrainian capital, Kyiv, came under attack from Russian ballistic missiles on Friday evening, Mayor Vitali Klitschko said, as air defenses operated over the city. Since late August the city has suffered sustained Russian attacks around the clock, which are part of a widening air campaign targeting Ukraine’s civilian infrastructure. “Air defence forces are operating in the capital. Kyiv is under ballistic missile fire. Stay in shelters!” Klitschko wrote on Telegram. An air-raid alert had earlier been issued in Kyiv, after which an explosion was heard in the city, Interfax-Ukraine reported. Military authorities lifted the alert after about 40 minutes, according to Reuters. There were no immediate reports of missile impacts, successful interceptions, damage or casualties in Kyiv, Interfax-Ukraine reported. ‘Utterly inhuman strike’ Later on Friday, a Russian glide bomb struck an apartment building in the northern city of Sumy, killing two people and injuring seven, three of them seriously, regional Governor Oleh Hryhorov said. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned what he called an “utterly inhuman strike” and said residents could still be trapped beneath the rubble. Zelenskyy said Russian forces had also struck a clinic in the central city of Pavlohrad and a logistics center outside Kyiv, but gave no details about casualties. ‘Enemy has attacked the Kyiv region again’ Earlier in the day, Timur Tkachenko, head of the Kyiv Regional Military Administration, said a production and warehouse facility had caught fire after a Russian drone strike in the Vyshhorod district outside the capital. Firefighters were working to bring the blaze under control, he added. “The enemy has attacked the Kyiv region again,” Tkachenko wrote on Telegram, adding that preliminary information indicated there were no casualties. The strike followed an earlier Russian drone attack on the Fastiv district of the Kyiv region that injured five people, including three children. Meanwhile, in the southern port city of Odesa, regional Governor Oleh Kiper said Russian forces carried out two strikes on the city center, with the second occurring after emergency crews had arrived at the scene. Kiper said 10 people had been wounded and that an administrative building and several vehicles had been damaged. Photos posted on Telegram showed emergency crews tackling a fire in a multi-story building.
