Donald Tusk summoned a high-level security meeting after Ukrainian rail officials said a Russian drone struck the locomotive of a Kyiv-Warsaw train on Sunday. Prime Minister Donald Tusk has warned that Poland must prepare for the possible use by Moscow of jet-powered drones after Russia struck targets close to the country’s border with Ukraine, with rail officials saying the locomotive of a passenger train had been hit. However, speaking on Sunday, Tusk said he “cannot confirm” reports that a passenger train was hit. “I cannot say that reports of an attack on a convoy of trucks or a passenger train on the Kyiv-Warsaw route are false, but we cannot confirm that such incidents took place,” he said, adding that “precise information is key.” “We are certain that a gas station, or an area near it, was hit about 2 kilometers from our border crossing. A freight train on a siding was also attacked,” he added. Tusk made the remarks on Sunday during a high-level security meeting he convened in response to the Russian attacks near Poland’s border. The defense and interior ministers and representatives of Poland’s security services attended the meeting at the Government Security Center in Warsaw. Drone threat "There is no doubt that we must be prepared together with our allies to react if necessary. This night's attacks indicate that the Russians are ready to use more dangerous equipment than before,” Tusk said. “I'm talking about jet drones here. Their range and precision are worrying,” he added. Tusk said Polish authorities recorded 13 strikes during Russia’s drone attacks on western Ukraine overnight. Earlier on Sunday, a Russian drone struck the locomotive of a Kyiv–Warsaw passenger train in Ukraine’s Volyn region, about two kilometers from the Polish border, Ukrainian state railway operator Ukrzaliznytsia said. None of the 206 passengers were injured after the train crew received an advance warning about the threat, it added. In a separate incident overnight, another drone struck a gas station near the Dorohusk–Yahodyn border crossing, setting two trucks on fire. Polish authorities said the attacks did not violate the country’s airspace. Poland scrambled fighter jets and issued alerts to residents of border regions as a precaution. Russia said on Sunday that it had carried out strikes on “railway infrastructure” in western Ukraine that is “used to transport military cargo from European countries,” according to news agency AFP. Hostile activities During the meeting on Sunday, Tusk warned that Russia could intensify its hostile activities in the coming weeks and months, adding that the escalation could extend to Polish territory. “Unfortunately, we cannot rule out that this escalation will also affect our territory,” he said. The prime minister said Poland must prepare for the possibility that drones could be used to disrupt railways or industrial facilities. Tusk also added that Polish border crossings would operate under special arrangements in the coming months to protect them against possible attacks. He did not provide details of the arrangements, but said officials would need to keep traffic flowing smoothly to avoid congestion. In recent weeks, Russian drones have struck border crossings in countries neighboring Ukraine, including Romania and Moldova.
