Ukrainian drones attacked a military airfield in the southern Russian city of Taganrog overnight, with satellite monitoring detecting a fire in an aircraft parking area, Ukrainian media reported Monday. NASA’s FIRMS fire-monitoring system recorded a thermal anomaly at the airfield at around 2:44am, according to the Ukrainian military outlet Militarnyi. The site lies roughly 40 kilometers from the Ukrainian border. Nearby is the Beriev aviation complex, where Russia repairs and modernizes A-50U airborne early warning and control aircraft. The aircraft provide long-range radar surveillance, track aerial targets and relay information used to direct fighter jets. There was no independent confirmation that any aircraft were damaged. Taganrog has repeatedly been targeted by Ukrainian forces. The extent of damage from Monday’s attack remains unclear.
