The 31-year-old had a lifetime driving ban and was wanted under three arrest warrants. A drunk driver who crashed a Porsche into a tree in eastern Poland was arrested after his passenger’s iPhone automatically called emergency services from the scene. Police were dispatched to the crash in Włodawa, near Poland’s eastern border with Ukraine, after they called the number back but received no answer. When officers arrived, they found the wrecked Porsche abandoned at the scene but neither occupant was nearby. Deputy Inspector Bożena Szymańska said police identified the owner of the phone that made the emergency call and the owner of the Porsche, then located the passenger and driver walking along the road. “The 31-year-old Ukrainian citizen driving the Porsche was intoxicated. A breathalyzer test revealed a blood alcohol content of over 2 promiles [10 times over the legal drink-drive limit],” she said. She added: “After checking police databases, it was discovered that the man had previously driven under the influence of alcohol [...] on several occasions and was also subject to a lifetime driving ban. “He was also wanted on three warrants. Furthermore, the Porsche he was driving did not have a valid technical inspection.” The man was detained and the car was taken to a police impound lot. A court in Włodawa later ordered him to be held in pre-trial detention. He now faces up to five years in prison.
