US President Donald Trump said Washington was reviewing its position on the Falkland Islands, raising new questions over the sovereignty dispute between Britain and Argentina and adding pressure on British Prime Minister Andy Burnham over defense spending. The US officially recognizes British administration of the South Atlantic territory but takes no position on sovereignty. Argentina invaded the islands in 1982, triggering a 74-day war that killed 649 Argentine and 255 British military personnel. In a 2013 referendum, 99.8% of voters backed retaining the islands’ status as a British Overseas Territory. Trump’s remarks follow reports that Washington could reconsider its stance if Britain does not increase defense spending. A Pentagon email leaked in April listed reassessing US diplomatic support for Britain’s claim to the Falkland Islands among options for pressuring NATO allies over their support for the Iran war.Trump told reporters: “I always review every position – that’s just one of many.”
