At least 633 people have been killed and nearly 3,000 remain missing after floods swept through Nepal and China’s Tibet region, according to the latest figures. The disaster was triggered Wednesday when a glacier collapse sent a torrent of rock, ice, mud and debris through Himalayan river valleys, destroying buildings, bridges, roads and power stations. Nepal has reported 626 deaths, while seven people have been killed in Tibet. Bad weather forced Nepal to suspend search-and-rescue operations on Saturday, with rain and fog making access to the worst-hit areas difficult. Authorities are monitoring two upstream lakes amid fears of further flooding. The United Nations says around 20,000 households need food assistance and more than 50,000 people require emergency water and other support. Hundreds of foreign nationals are among those missing. Nepal is now seeking specialized international help with tunnel rescues, DNA identification and restoring transport links.
